Matriarch
Matriarch., August 2019
Mixed Media: Scanned Navajo Textiles, Canvas Print, Pine, Mother of Pearl Inlay, Yarn.
30” x 45” x 2”
Made to honor Diné Matriarchs, this work is a celebration of the women who are the foundation of the Navajo family. An homage to the abundance of love they give freely, the guidance they provide, and the strength they wield, our Diné Matriarchs are Sacred. The traditional Navajo loom structure was handcrafted from pine and yarn and embellished with an inlay of Mother of Pearl, and the portrait itself was rendered digitally.
In creating all her portraits Darby Raymond-Overstreet works from photographs, creating a digital drawing upon which she integrates photographs/scans of Navajo weavings woven between 1880 and1950. The portrait is printed onto canvas with archival inks and integrated into the loom with yarn, a style unique to Raymond-Overstreet’s work. This particular portrait was made with a combination of various style Chief Blankets.
